What is The Love Hypothesis movie about?
The story follows Olive Smith, a PhD candidate who impulsively kisses intimidating professor Dr. Adam Carlsen to convince her best friend that she has moved on from her crush.
The situation becomes more complicated when Olive and Adam agree to enter a fake relationship. What begins as a carefully controlled arrangement gradually becomes harder for both of them to separate from their real feelings.
The film therefore keeps one of the novel's central romance tropes: fake dating that starts to feel real.

Is The Love Hypothesis movie based on the book?
Yes. The movie is based on Ali Hazelwood's 2021 bestselling novel The Love Hypothesis. Prime Video describes the film as an adaptation of the New York Times bestseller.
The novel originally became especially popular among online romance readers and has remained one of Hazelwood's best-known works.
One interesting part of the book's history is that The Love Hypothesis grew out of Star Wars fan fiction, although the published novel was subsequently developed into its own story and characters.
What is different between The Love Hypothesis movie and the book?
Some changes are inevitable when a novel is adapted into a roughly two-hour movie. However, not every reported or social-media-discussed change should be treated as confirmed unless it comes from the filmmakers, cast or the finished film.
The central setup remains recognisable: Olive is a PhD candidate, Adam is an intimidating professor, and their fake relationship creates the romantic conflict.
For readers worried about adaptation changes, the safest approach is to compare confirmed scenes from the trailer and official promotional material with the novel rather than relying on unverified fan posts.

The adaptation brings together several audiences that are already highly engaged online: Ali Hazelwood readers, romance-book fans, BookTok users and viewers looking for new romantic comedies.
The popularity of the source material also means audiences are likely to compare the film's casting, chemistry and adaptation choices with their expectations from the novel.
