At least 16 people were killed and 32 others injured after a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck China's Tibet Autonomous Region, causing severe structural destruction and triggering immediate emergency response operations.
What Happened in Tibet?
A violent 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Tibet region on Thursday evening, shaking communities across the high-altitude plateau. According to official disaster monitoring centers, the tremor struck at a shallow depth, which significantly amplified its destructive impact on the surface. Residents felt intense shocks as ground motion buckled roads, threw household belongings into chaos, and triggered localized landslides in mountainous sections. It was reported as the strongest seismic event to impact the region in the last five years, creating widespread panic across nearby towns.
Where Was the epicenter and Affected Areas?
The earthquake’s epicenter was located in Baqing County within the jurisdiction of Nagqu City, situated over 300 kilometers (186 miles) north of Tibet's capital, Lhasa. Nagqu sits at an extreme average altitude of nearly 4,800 meters, making it one of the highest urban regions on earth. Because the tremors occurred in a remote, high-altitude zone, emergency transport routes faced immediate bottlenecks as rocky debris slid down steep hillsides onto critical access roads connecting remote villages.
Who Are the Victims and Casualty Details?
According to statements released by the Nagqu media office and city government officials, the casualty count stands at 16 confirmed fatalities. Additionally, 32 individuals sustained injuries during the shaking. Among the injured, 11 victims remain in serious condition and are receiving intensive medical care at regional facilities. The remaining 21 individuals sustained minor injuries, mostly related to falling debris, shattered glass, and sudden structural failures. Local medical personnel have set up field triage centers to treat victims as emergency services arrive.
Why Is the Destruction So Widespread?
The high level of destruction is tied to local housing structures and shallow focal depth. At least 339 residential homes collapsed entirely or suffered severe structural breaches, rendering hundreds of families homeless in a matter of seconds. Dozens of agricultural structures and livestock sheds were also flattened, threatening the livelihoods of local pastoral communities. Many traditional houses in rural Nagqu are constructed with heavy mud, stone, or unreinforced masonry, which offer limited resistance against violent, low-depth horizontal earthquake waves.
How Are Rescue Operations Progressing?
More than 1,600 emergency responders, medical workers, firefighters, and armed police officers have been deployed to the disaster zone to clear rubble and locate trapped survivors. State relief agencies are rushing emergency infrastructure to the high-altitude zone, including over 1,000 prefabricated housing units, 3,000 winterized tents, folding beds, flashlights, and warm clothing to protect displace residents from freezing nighttime temperatures. Search operations remain ongoing around the clock as teams clear heavy masonry by hand and with heavy machinery.
