Cyclone Arnab Hits Andhra: Red Alert Issued

Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Arnab commenced its landfall process along the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts, passing close to Kakinada and Bapatla. According to updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone struck with sustained wind speeds ranging between 115 kmph and 135 kmph, accompanied by destructive gusts reaching up to 150 kmph. The storm system triggered widespread downpours, strong gales, and significant sea surges along the eastern coastline.

The regional meteorological office issued maximum red alerts across vulnerable coastal districts, warning of high-velocity winds, structural risks, localized flooding, and prolonged power outages.

Which Places and Vacant Coastal Regions Are Most Sensitive?

The IMD identified multiple vulnerable districts and low-lying coastal belts as high-risk regions. The most sensitive areas hit or threatened by the cyclone include:

  • Kakinada & Yanam: Serving as the primary landfall zone, these areas experienced severe storm surges, waterlogging, and uprooted trees and power infrastructure.

  • Visakhapatnam (Vizag): High-density urban areas and low-lying coastal pockets experienced heavy rainfall, localized waterlogging, flight cancellations, and fallen trees.

  • Anakapalle, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, and Bapatla: Low-lying agrarian and fishing belts along the sea face major risks of sea-water inundation and agricultural destruction.

  • Srikakulam & Vizianagaram: Northern coastal belts faced squally weather, high sea waves, and intense rain bands.

  • Flood-Prone Inundation Zones: Coastal estuaries, river mouths, and vacant mudflats were identified as high-risk, prompting complete closures and evacuations.

How Has the State Government Prepared and Evacuated High-Risk Areas?

In response to the red alert, the Andhra Pradesh state government, led by district collectors and emergency response units, initiated large-scale precautionary operations:

  1. Evacuation Operations: Over 84,000 residents living in fragile housing, vacant low-lying settlements, and coastal villages were moved to roughly 290 relief camps equipped with food, water, and medical aid.

  2. Preemptive Healthcare Support: Authorities proactively shifted more than 1,350 pregnant women in advanced stages to district health centers and primary health facilities to guarantee emergency medical access.

  3. Deployment of Disaster Relief Teams: Units of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Indian Coast Guard, and Indian Navy were deployed to critical nodes for swift clearance of debris and emergency rescue operations.

  4. Transport and Infrastructure Shutdowns: To prevent casualties, educational institutions were temporarily closed, fishing operations strictly halted, and more than 90 train services and dozens of flights connecting Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam airports were cancelled.

What Are the Main Impacts and Safety Warnings Issued for Residents?

The impact of Cyclone Arnab led to tree uprooting, road blockages, structural damage to temporary shelters, and utility disruptions in Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, and Yanam. Agricultural land and standing horticulture crops face significant waterlogging threats. Disaster management authorities strongly advised citizens across sensitive coastal districts to stay indoors, avoid traveling on exposed highways, and refrain from venturing near sea beaches until weather conditions normalize.
