Nana Patekar Passes Away at 75

Veteran actor Nana Patekar passed away at 75 due to a cardiac arrest at his Goa home. Maharashtra will accord him a full state funeral in Pune.

Who Was Nana Patekar and What Led to the Tragedy?

Vishwanath "Nana" Patekar was one of Indian cinema’s most revered and distinct talents, celebrated for his uncompromising artistic integrity. Born with a rare ability to infuse ordinary lines with raw life, he transitioned from experimental theatre to become a powerhouse on the silver screen. His career spanned close to five decades, during which he earned multiple National Film Awards and widespread acclaim for legendary roles in masterpieces like Parinda, Krantiveer, and Natsamrat.

On a quiet Thursday morning, tragedy struck unexpectedly. Reports revealed that the actor had messaged a close friend at around 2:30 AM stating that he was feeling unwell. By the time help arrived at his Goa residence at roughly 4:00 AM, he was found gasping and sweating. Despite immediate efforts to rush him to the hospital, he was declared dead at 5:20 AM following a severe cardiac arrest.

Where Will the Last Rites and State Funeral Take Place?

The actor's final journey will bring him back to Maharashtra, where he shaped his creative and personal legacy. His son, Malhar Patekar, confirmed the heartbreaking news and travelled from Pune to Goa to complete the formalities.

To honor his unparalleled contribution to arts, culture, and regional theatre, the Maharashtra government—headed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and announced by Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar—declared that the veteran icon will be given a full state funeral. The last rites and cremation are scheduled to take place on the premises of his family farmhouse located at Donje on the outskirts of Pune.

How Did the Film Industry and Nation React?

The news of Patekar's passing sent immediate shockwaves across the political landscape, cultural circles, and the film industry. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, union ministers, and various chief ministers took to social media to express their condolences, highlighting not just his cinematic brilliance but also his deep patriotism and active humanitarian efforts. Through organizations like the Naam Foundation, Patekar had dedicated significant years of his life to rural development, drought relief, and water conservation.

Colleagues from Bollywood and regional cinema—including actors like Akshay Kumar, Rajinikanth, and Kamal Haasan—shared emotional tributes, remembering him as a "force of nature" and an artist who never compromised his authenticity. His departure leaves an irreplaceable void in Indian cinema, but his powerful legacy of art, fearlessness, and social responsibility will continue to inspire generations to come.
