Special camp in Ranjit Nagar aids voters in electoral roll updates
A camp in Ranjit Nagar assists voters with the Special Intensive Revision, addressing electoral roll updates and corrections.
On Monday, residents of Ranjit Nagar in Delhi had the opportunity to participate in a special camp dedicated to aiding voters during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. The camp focuses on issues related to electoral rolls, helping individuals with necessary updates to their voter details and documentation.
Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and other officials were on hand to check documents and guide voters through the correction process for names, addresses, and other specifics in the electoral rolls. They also provided vital information regarding the SIR process and the documentation required for various types of applications.
Shiv Kumar Sharma, the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO), confirmed to IANS that the SIR initiative is currently in progress in the area. He elaborated on the timeline of the electoral process, noting that a pre-exercise phase was conducted before the claims, objections, and notices period began on August 31. Initially set to conclude on September 30, this period has been extended to October 30, during which voters can submit Form 6 to register as new voters.
Following this submission period, the disposal of claims and objections will proceed until November 13. The final electoral roll is scheduled for publication on December 4, marking a significant step in the electoral process.
Sharma highlighted that there are currently no significant challenges being faced during the SIR exercise in Ranjit Nagar. He noted that voter participation remains high, and all submitted forms were successfully digitized and recorded. Efforts have been implemented to remove duplicate entries and names of individuals who have passed away, moved, or are otherwise ineligible from the electoral rolls.
To ensure that all voters have access to necessary support, Sharma mentioned that designated locations have been set up to assist individuals. "We have made arrangements at various designated spots through our AERO officers, principals, and others. Camps like today's are organized to help voters in filling out forms and informing them about the required documents for each application," he said.
The Special Intensive Revision is a crucial exercise conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI) aimed at updating electoral rolls. This process includes eliminating duplicate, deceased, and ineligible entries. The SIR initiative has been implemented in various states and union territories, having gained attention during its implementation in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry ahead of upcoming elections.
Political controversy has sometimes surrounded the SIR due to concerns raised by opposition parties regarding the potential exclusion of eligible voters, especially from minority communities. Notably, in West Bengal, the initial exclusion of numerous names from the revised electoral rolls led to significant scrutiny, although some were later restored post-verification.
As of May 2026, the SIR exercise has progressed through most regions; however, certain areas, including Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, have had their exercises postponed due to adverse weather conditions.
