Grand Theft Auto V has survived three console generations, countless updates and enough re-releases to qualify for a pension.

Now, GTA VI is preparing to replace it.

But is GTA VI simply GTA V with prettier beaches, smarter pedestrians and more expensive virtual cars? Or is Rockstar building a completely different kind of open-world game?

Before comparing them directly, let us look at what made each game important.

GTA V: The Game That Refused to Retire

Released in 2013, GTA V takes place in Los Santos and Blaine County, a fictional version of Southern California.

Its biggest storytelling innovation was the introduction of three playable protagonists:

  • Michael De Santa, a retired bank robber suffering through family problems

  • Franklin Clinton, an ambitious street hustler searching for a better life

  • Trevor Philips, a human warning label with access to aircraft

Players could switch between them during missions and free exploration. Each character had his own home, personality, relationships, abilities and criminal connections.

The story focused heavily on large-scale heists, government corruption, celebrity culture and the strange friendship between three men who probably should never have been placed in the same group chat.

What Made GTA V Special?

GTA V offered a huge open world containing:

  • Los Santos

  • Mountains and countryside

  • Beaches and deserts

  • Wildlife

  • Aircraft and boats

  • Shops and properties

  • Sports and side activities

  • Heists with multiple approaches

  • Character switching

  • Extensive vehicle customisation

Its world was enormous for 2013, while its driving and shooting were faster and more accessible than GTA IV.

Then came GTA Online, which transformed GTA V from a successful game into a decade-long criminal economy.

Players could buy apartments, businesses, bunkers, nightclubs, supercars, submarines and eventually enough military equipment to make the local police department reconsider its career choices.

GTA V remains impressive, but its age is visible. Many buildings cannot be entered, NPC behaviour is limited, police often locate players too easily and much of the world stops reacting once the scripted chaos ends.

GTA VI: Welcome Back to Vice City

GTA VI takes players to Leonida, Rockstar’s fictional version of Florida.

Vice City is the central location, but Leonida also includes tropical islands, swamps, industrial communities, coastal towns and wilderness.

Instead of three protagonists, GTA VI focuses on Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a criminal couple caught in a larger conspiracy after a robbery goes wrong.

Lucia has recently left prison and wants to build a better future. Jason has a military background and experience working with local criminals.

Their relationship appears to be the emotional heart of the story.

Where GTA V explored the unstable friendship between Michael, Franklin and Trevor, GTA VI seems likely to explore love, loyalty, trust and survival between two people whose romantic dates occasionally involve masks and getaway vehicles.

What Makes GTA VI Different?

Official footage and screenshots reveal:

  • A much denser Vice City

  • Multiple regions across Leonida

  • Detailed crowds

  • Nightclubs, motels, stores and properties

  • Wildlife in swamps and coastal areas

  • Boats, lowriders, motorcycles and aircraft

  • Police raids

  • Social-media videos

  • More varied interiors

  • A major focus on Jason and Lucia’s partnership

Rockstar has not confirmed every rumoured gameplay system, but GTA VI clearly aims to create a world that feels more crowded, physical and reactive.

GTA V vs GTA VI: Complete Comparison

1. Story and Protagonists

GTA V

GTA V follows three criminals at very different stages of life.

Michael wants excitement after retirement. Franklin wants success. Trevor wants chaos, revenge and possibly a functioning refrigerator.

The three-character structure provides variety, but it also divides the emotional focus of the story.

GTA VI

GTA VI centres on Jason and Lucia.

Because they are partners in both crime and life, missions may feel more personal. Their decisions could affect not only the success of a robbery but also their trust in one another.

The smaller main cast may allow Rockstar to build a deeper and more focused relationship.

Biggest difference: GTA V is about three criminals learning to work together. GTA VI appears to be about two people trying to survive together.

2. Map and Open World

GTA V

Los Santos and Blaine County include a city, desert, mountains, forests and coastline.

The map is large, although much of the northern countryside feels quieter than the city.

GTA VI

Leonida appears more regionally diverse.

Vice City offers beaches, skyscrapers and nightlife. The Leonida Keys provide islands and boating. Grassrivers contains swamps and wildlife, while Port Gellhorn appears poorer and more industrial.

The improvement may not simply be a larger map. GTA VI’s regions appear to have distinct cultures, vehicles, businesses and populations.

Winner: GTA VI appears more varied and densely populated.

3. Graphics and Visual Detail

GTA V looked outstanding in 2013 and has since received improved textures, lighting, frame rates and ray-traced effects on newer hardware.

GTA VI, however, is being designed specifically for modern consoles.

Its trailers show:

  • More realistic skin and hair

  • Denser traffic

  • Larger crowds

  • Detailed reflections

  • Improved weather

  • Better water

  • More natural clothing movement

  • Highly detailed vehicle interiors

  • Stronger facial animation

GTA V characters still look good, but GTA VI characters look as though they have skincare routines, individual hair strands and unpaid electricity bills.

Winner: GTA VI, unless Rockstar somehow releases GTA V again for the PlayStation 7.

4. Physics and Movement

GTA V uses relatively light and accessible vehicle handling. Cars are fast, responsive and easy to control.

However, many fans felt that it removed some of GTA IV’s heavier vehicle suspension, dramatic crashes and detailed ragdoll reactions.

GTA VI appears to be bringing back more physical weight.

Cars visibly lean during turns, lowriders bounce, boats react to water and characters move more naturally around objects.

Rockstar has not fully explained the physics system, but GTA VI may combine:

  • GTA IV’s vehicle weight

  • GTA V’s responsive controls

  • Red Dead Redemption 2’s detailed animations

That would be the ideal combination: realistic enough to feel satisfying, but not so realistic that parking becomes the game’s hardest mission.

5. NPC Artificial Intelligence

GTA V NPCs

GTA V pedestrians walk, drive, fight, call police and react to danger. However, their behaviour is often brief and predictable.

Cause trouble and most people either run away, fight you or become professional stunt drivers while escaping.

GTA VI NPCs

GTA VI’s crowds appear much more individualised.

People can be seen:

  • Recording videos

  • Exercising

  • Partying

  • Talking in groups

  • Working

  • Relaxing on beaches

  • Attending events

  • Reacting to police activity

Social media may also influence NPC behaviour. Instead of simply escaping a crime, some characters may film it or share it online.

It remains unconfirmed whether NPCs will remember the player long-term, follow complete daily schedules or hold complex conversations.

Still, GTA VI’s world appears less like a collection of background characters and more like a population with actual activities.

Winner: Almost certainly GTA VI.

6. Police and Wanted System

GTA V uses the familiar wanted-star system. Commit crimes, gain stars and survive increasingly aggressive police responses.

The system is fun, but officers can sometimes discover the player’s location with suspicious supernatural accuracy.

GTA VI may feature a more investigative response.

Possible improvements suggested by the footage include:

  • Witnesses reporting crimes

  • Police securing an area

  • Tactical raids

  • Roadblocks

  • More organised formations

  • Greater use of vehicle descriptions

  • Security cameras and phone recordings

These systems have not all been officially confirmed, but the presence of smartphones everywhere creates interesting possibilities.

In GTA V, the police chased you because the game told them where you were.

In GTA VI, they may chase you because seventeen people livestreamed your robbery from six different angles.

7. Vehicles and Garages

GTA V contains an enormous collection of cars, motorcycles, boats, helicopters and aircraft.

Vehicle customisation includes paint, wheels, suspension, armour, engines and performance upgrades.

GTA VI appears likely to expand this with more detailed interiors, realistic suspension and stronger regional vehicle culture.

Vice City may favour supercars and lowriders, while rural areas could contain dirt bikes, pickup trucks, ATVs and airboats.

Garages may also become more useful. Players will expect reliable vehicle ownership, multiple storage locations and better ways to recover customised cars.

After all, nobody wants to spend ₹5 million on a virtual supercar only to lose it because Jason parked it beside a swamp and forgot.

8. Character Customisation

GTA V lets players change clothes, hairstyles, facial hair and tattoos. Franklin can also improve his strength, stamina and shooting skills.

GTA VI appears to offer more detailed clothing, jewellery, hairstyles and tattoos.

Rumours suggest Jason and Lucia may gain or lose weight, build muscle and physically change depending on food or exercise.

That would resemble GTA: San Andreas, where CJ’s body changed according to the player’s lifestyle.

However, Rockstar has not officially confirmed a full diet or bodybuilding system.

For now, we know character appearance will be customisable. We do not yet know whether Jason can transform from criminal drifter to Vice City’s strongest protein influencer.

9. Social Media and Smartphones

GTA V contains fictional websites, social networks and Lifeinvader, but they are mostly used for satire, shopping and selected missions.

GTA VI appears to place social media directly inside the living world.

Trailers show vertical videos, livestreams, comments and viral clips.

Social media could help players:

  • Discover random events

  • Find locations

  • Follow characters

  • Unlock missions

  • Track trends

  • View crimes and public incidents

  • Learn about businesses and musicians

This could become GTA VI’s version of a dynamic news system, showing what is happening across Leonida.

It may also create the most realistic modern feature imaginable: completing a dangerous mission and immediately checking whether it went viral.

10. GTA Online vs the Future of GTA VI Online

GTA Online is one of the largest reasons GTA V remained popular for so long.

It offers businesses, races, heists, properties, weaponised vehicles and years of additional content.

Rockstar has not yet fully detailed GTA VI’s online component.

A future GTA VI Online could offer:

  • A more detailed Leonida map

  • Improved role-playing systems

  • Better property ownership

  • Expanded businesses

  • More interactive interiors

  • Smarter NPCs

  • Deeper vehicle customisation

  • Larger public events

However, players also hope Rockstar keeps the early experience grounded.

Nobody wants to begin as a small-time Vice City criminal and immediately get destroyed by someone flying a nuclear-powered lawnmower.

Interesting GTA V and GTA VI Facts

GTA V originally launched in 2013, meaning the gap between GTA V and GTA VI is longer than the entire school education of many players.

GTA V has appeared across three generations of PlayStation and Xbox hardware.

GTA VI returns to Vice City, but the new version is modern rather than set in the 1980s.

Lucia is the series’ first female lead in a modern mainline GTA story.

GTA V uses three main protagonists, while GTA VI returns to a tighter two-character structure.

Rockstar’s official GTA VI gallery contains dozens of images covering characters, locations and the wider culture of Leonida.

And yes, GTA V will probably continue receiving attention even after GTA VI launches. At this point, the game is less of a product and more of a permanent resident.

Which Game Will Be Better?

GTA V has one enormous advantage: it is already proven.

Its story, heists, map and online mode have entertained players for more than a decade.

GTA VI has greater technology, bigger expectations and a far more detailed world—but players have not yet experienced the final game.

Based on what Rockstar has shown, GTA VI should improve:

  • Graphics

  • NPC behaviour

  • Environmental detail

  • Character animation

  • World density

  • Vehicle physics

  • Social-media integration

  • Police responses

  • Interior design

  • Story intimacy

But bigger does not automatically mean better.

GTA VI must still deliver memorable missions, enjoyable controls, strong characters and enough freedom for players to create their own chaos.

A realistic ocean is impressive.

A realistic ocean becomes memorable when somebody accidentally drives a stolen bus into it while escaping three police helicopters.

GTA VI Release Date

GTA VI is officially scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, for:

  • PlayStation 5

  • Xbox Series X

  • Xbox Series S

A PC release date has not yet been officially announced.

Until launch, GTA V remains the main Grand Theft Auto experience—which is excellent news for Rockstar and worrying news for players who thought they had finally escaped Los Santos.

Final Verdict

GTA V created an enormous criminal playground.

GTA VI appears to be creating a criminal ecosystem.

GTA V gave us three protagonists, memorable heists and a world designed for freedom. GTA VI seems ready to add denser crowds, deeper character relationships, smarter reactions and a more interactive version of modern America.

The biggest difference may not be map size or graphics.

It may be how the world responds.

In GTA V, you create chaos and the city reacts briefly.

In GTA VI, the city may witness the chaos, record it, report it, turn it into a meme and send the police your licence plate before you have even changed vehicles.

That is not simply next-generation gaming.

That is modern life with wanted stars.
