✨ The Great Banana Escape

There once was a banana,
Who lived beside a pear,
He wore a yellow jacket,
And gelled his funny hair.

Each morning from the fruit bowl,
He watched the children eat,
"One day they'll choose me too," he cried,
"And turn me into a treat!"

Then Monday morning finally came,
A little hand appeared.

"OH NO! TODAY'S THE DAY!" he yelled,
And suddenly disappeared!

He jumped across the kitchen,
And rolled beneath a chair,
He bounced into a cereal bowl,

SPLASH!

Milk went everywhere!

"Catch that banana!" Daddy cried.

"He's getting away!"

The banana grabbed a tiny spoon,

And shouted—

"NOT TODAY!" ✨✨

✨ The Chase Begins

He rolled across the dining room,
He zoomed across the floor,
He bumped into the sleepy cat,

Then crashed into the door.

BANG!

The cat jumped up.

"MEOWWW!"

Dad dropped his toast.

Mum spilled her tea.

And Grandma calmly whispered,

"Well...

That's the fastest banana
I've ever seen."

✨ Banana Gets a Scooter

Outside he found a scooter,
Just sitting by the gate.

"I need some transportation!

Breakfast cannot wait!"

He put one foot upon it,

And pushed with all his might.

WHOOSH!

He flew along the pavement,

What a ridiculous sight!

A banana on a scooter,

Wearing sunglasses too,

Passed a dog,

Passed a frog,

And passed a kangaroo!

"Excuse me!" yelled the kangaroo.

"Bananas cannot drive!"

The banana shouted back,

"THAT'S WHY I'M STILL ALIVE!" ?

✨ Then Came the Monkey...

The banana reached the playground,

And thought that he was free.

Until he heard a strange little sound,

Coming from a tree.

"Ooo... ooo... AHH AHH!"

Banana froze.

"Oh dear."

A monkey slowly climbed down.

The banana shook with fear.

The monkey looked at Banana.

Banana looked at him.

The monkey licked his lips...

Banana's chances looked quite slim.

"Nice banana," Monkey said.

"Nice monkey," he replied.

"Are you hungry?"

"VERY."

Banana screamed—

"GOODBYE!"

And ran away to hide! ✨✨✨

✨ Banana Goes to Space

He spotted a cardboard rocket,

Beside the playground slide.

"If Earth is full of hungry folks,

Then SPACE is where I'll hide!"

He climbed aboard the rocket,

And counted:

THREE!

TWO!

ONE!

He pressed a button labelled:

"PLEASE DO NOT PRESS."

So naturally...

He pressed it.

BOOOOOOM! ?

Up went the banana,

Past clouds so soft and white,

Past airplanes and some pigeons,

Who shouted:

"WHAT A SIGHT!"

He landed on the Moon,

And planted a tiny flag.

Then suddenly an alien appeared,

Holding a shopping bag.

✨ "Greetings, yellow Earth creature."

✨ "Hello."

✨ "What are you?"

✨ "A banana."

The alien checked his cookbook.

"Oh!"

Banana gulped.

"Do aliens eat bananas?"

The alien smiled.

"Only on Tuesdays."

Banana checked the calendar.

It was...

MONDAY.

"PHEW!"

✨ The Banana Becomes a Moon Hero

The aliens loved Banana.

They gave him a golden crown.

They danced the Moon Banana Dance,

While bouncing up and down.

Banana became famous,

Throughout the Milky Way.

Nobody tried to eat him,

Not even once a day!

He opened up a restaurant,

Called:

✨ BANANA'S PLACE

The strangest restaurant in space.

Its menu had:

Moon Pizza ?

Meteor Meatballs

Saturn Sandwiches ?

Rocket Pops

And...

Absolutely NO bananas.

Obviously.

✨ But Banana Missed Home

After seven silly months,

Banana felt quite sad.

He missed the kitchen fruit bowl.

He even missed old Dad.

He missed the sleepy family cat.

He missed his friend the pear.

He missed the morning sunshine,

And Grandma's funny hair.

So Banana packed his suitcase,

And waved his friends goodbye.

Then jumped aboard his rocket,

And zoomed across the sky.

WHOOSH! ?

Back through all the clouds,

Back past every star,

Until he finally landed...

Right beside the family car.

✨ Banana Comes Home

Everyone came running.

"BANANA!"

Mum cried.

"YOU'RE BACK!"

Dad hugged the little banana.

The cat prepared to attack.

Grandma walked outside,

Holding something on a plate.

Banana became nervous.

"Grandma...

What did you make?"

Grandma smiled.

"Chocolate cake."

Banana sighed with relief.

"Thank goodness."

Then Grandma added:

"It's banana cake."

Banana screamed.

"NOT AGAINNNNNNN!"

And disappeared down the street.

✨✨✨✨

✨ THE END

...or is it?

For Parents

Funny poems and stories can make reading feel like play, particularly for younger readers. Rhyming patterns, repeated phrases and sound effects such as WHOOSH, BANG and SPLASH encourage children to read aloud and anticipate what comes next.

The Great Banana Escape is designed as a light, imaginative read-aloud story with simple vocabulary, visual comedy and plenty of opportunities for children and parents to perform the characters together.
