India’s gross Goods and Services Tax collections rose 14.7% year-on-year to ₹2.04 lakh crore in September 2026, supported by strong growth in taxes collected on imports. September marked the third consecutive month in which monthly GST revenue was at or around the ₹2 lakh crore level, underscoring continued strength in government indirect-tax receipts.

Gross collections increased from approximately ₹1.77 lakh crore in September 2025, while net GST revenue after refunds rose even faster — by 18.1% to ₹1.77 lakh crore.

September GST Collections Reach ₹2.04 Lakh Crore

Gross GST revenue for September stood at approximately ₹2.04 lakh crore, representing growth of 14.7% from a year earlier.

September 2025 had generated around ₹1.77 lakh crore in GST revenue.

The growth rate also accelerated slightly compared with August.

GST revenue had risen around 14.3% in August and 15.4% in July, according to the September report. July collections stood at approximately ₹2.11 lakh crore, followed by about ₹2.00 lakh crore in August and ₹2.04 lakh crore in September.

That means monthly GST receipts have remained close to or above the ₹2 lakh crore threshold throughout the first three months of the second quarter of FY27.

Import GST Revenue Jumps 25.9%

One of the most significant features of the September data was the sharp increase in GST collected on imported goods.

Gross GST revenue from imports rose 25.9% year-on-year to ₹65,525 crore, compared with ₹52,031 crore during September 2025.

Import-related GST therefore expanded considerably faster than domestic collections.

The stronger import-tax numbers may reflect a combination of higher import values, trade activity and tax realisation. However, GST revenue figures alone do not identify which factor contributed most to the increase.

Domestic GST Collections Rise 10.1%

Gross domestic GST revenue reached approximately ₹1.38 lakh crore in September, increasing 10.1% year-on-year from about ₹1.25 lakh crore.

While domestic growth remained in double digits, it was well below the 25.9% increase recorded in import-linked GST revenue.

The difference between the two categories is also visible in the financial-year-to-date figures.

During April-September 2026, domestic gross GST revenue grew 6.1%, compared with a 27.1% rise in import collections.

Net GST Collections Grow Faster at 18.1%

After accounting for refunds, net GST revenue rose 18.1% year-on-year to ₹1.77 lakh crore in September.

Net collections stood at about ₹1.50 lakh crore during the corresponding month last year.

Net domestic GST revenue increased 13.5% to ₹1.24 lakh crore, while net customs-related GST revenue rose 30.8% to ₹52,028 crore.

The faster increase in net revenue partly reflects a decline in refunds during September.

GST Refunds Fall 3% in September

Total GST refunds declined approximately 3% year-on-year to ₹27,001 crore, compared with ₹27,848 crore in September 2025.

Domestic refunds declined 13.5% to ₹13,504 crore.

However, refunds related to GST collected through imports increased 10.2% to ₹13,497 crore.

Because overall refunds fell while gross tax receipts increased, growth in net collections exceeded growth in gross revenue during the month.

April-September GST Collections Reach ₹12.46 Lakh Crore

For the first six months of FY27, India collected ₹12.46 lakh crore in gross GST revenue, an increase of 11.6% from ₹11.17 lakh crore during April-September of the previous financial year.

The FY27 first-half breakdown shows:

  • Gross domestic GST revenue: ₹8.74 lakh crore, up 6.1%

  • Gross GST from imports: ₹3.72 lakh crore, up 27.1%

  • Total gross GST: ₹12.46 lakh crore, up 11.6%

  • Net GST revenue: ₹10.66 lakh crore, up 10.4%

  • Total refunds: ₹1.80 lakh crore, up 18.8%

Why the GST Numbers Matter

GST revenue is closely watched as a broad indicator of taxable consumption, imports, business activity and tax compliance across the economy.

Consistently high monthly collections strengthen government revenue and can provide greater fiscal flexibility.

However, the September figures also show that headline growth was partly driven by particularly strong import-linked revenue.

Domestic collections grew 10.1%, compared with 25.9% for imports. That distinction matters when interpreting GST data as an indicator of domestic economic activity.

The official numbers are provisional and may be revised when the data are finalised.

What Happens Next?

Attention will now turn to October GST receipts, which will capture tax activity linked to September transactions and the beginning of India's peak festive-consumption period.

The GST Council is also scheduled to meet on October 7, putting tax administration, refund procedures and other GST-related policy issues back in focus.

If domestic collections continue growing alongside strong import-linked revenue, the government could maintain double-digit GST growth into the second half of FY27.
