The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), in collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and IHMCL, has officially launched OneTag, a groundbreaking FASTag portability feature available on the Rajmargyatra mobile app.
Introduction: A Major Upgrade to India's Toll Collection Infrastructure
Since the nationwide rollout of National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) FASTag, automated tolling has transformed highway travel across India.
However, one persistent operational pain point for vehicle owners was the inability to port their FASTag to another bank. If a customer experienced poor customer service, wallet balance transfer glitches, account freezing, or simply wanted to consolidate their finances under a preferred bank, they had to go through a tedious multi-step procedure:
Request formal cancellation of the existing FASTag account.
Wait for the old issuer to refund the security deposit and remaining balance.
Peel off the existing Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) sticker from the windshield (often damaging the windshield or tearing the delicate internal chip).
Order a new FASTag, wait for physical dispatch, and pay reissuance or tag fees.
Re-verify vehicle documents (RC, ID proof) and re-affix the new sticker.
Unveiled by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari at the Global Fintech Fest and deployed directly onto NHAI's flagship Rajmargyatra application, OneTag functions exactly like Mobile Number Portability (MNP) for telecom users.
Key Features & How OneTag Works
OneTag establishes an interoperable layer over the existing NETC framework. Rather than issuing new hardware for every customer preference change, the software backend updates the routing rules inside NPCI's central database.
Core Features at a Glance
Zero Hardware Replacement: Keep the same physical RFID sticker affixed to your windshield.
Unchanged Tag Identification: Your unique FASTag ID and vehicle registration record remain unchanged in the national tolling registry.
Unified Digital Portal: The entire switching workflow is executed digitally within the Rajmargyatra app.
Automatic Wallet Settlement: Upon successful migration, the previous issuing bank closes the old prepaid wallet and automatically refunds any remaining balance post-adjustments.
6-Month Cooling Period: To prevent misuse and operational churn, an interoperable FASTag can only be ported once every six months.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Port Your FASTag via Rajmargyatra
Migrating your FASTag account to a new bank takes only a few minutes through the NHAI Rajmargyatra mobile app.
Download the official Rajmargyatra app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Register or log in using the mobile number linked to your vehicle's registration and current FASTag.
Navigate to the OneTag / FASTag Portability section on the app dashboard. Enter your Vehicle Registration Number (VRN). The system will check NPCI databases to verify if your current tag is active, eligible for porting, and outside the 6-month cooling window.
Once eligibility is confirmed, your current issuer bank will generate and transmit a 6-digit Mobile Verification Code (MVC) via SMS to your registered mobile number. Enter this code into the app to validate authorization.
Browse the list of participating NETC issuer banks available on the portal. Select the new bank you wish to switch to based on your preference for customer service, credit card rewards, or unified banking apps.
Complete fresh Know Your Customer (KYC) verification and open a new FASTag wallet with your chosen bank directly within the interface.
Upon completion, NPCI updates the back-end routing. Your existing physical RFID tag is immediately re-mapped to your new bank account. The old bank will automatically close the former wallet and process a balance refund to your primary source account.
Why OneTag Matters: Environmental and Systemic Benefits
While consumer convenience is the primary highlight, OneTag delivers significant operational and environmental advantages across the ecosystem:
1. Massive Plastic and E-Waste Reduction
With tens of millions of active tags in circulation, thousands of users historically requested new physical tags every month due to bank changes or account disputes. Each physical FASTag consists of pet-based layers, copper/aluminum antenna coils, and microchip components. By decoupling the software provider from the physical hardware, OneTag saves tons of plastic, metal, and electronic waste over time.
2. Reduced Supply Chain Costs for Banks and NHAI
Manufacturing, printing, packaging, and dispatching physical RFID tags incurs substantial logistical expense for banks and road transport agencies. OneTag eliminates unnecessary tag production and courier handling, significantly reducing operational overhead.
3. Fostering Fair Market Competition Among Banks
Previously, customers stayed with sub-par FASTag issuers simply to avoid the hassle of removing physical windshield tags and waiting for new ones. With OneTag, banks must compete on service quality, uptime, quick dispute resolution, app features, and cashbacks to retain their customer base.
OneTag vs. Traditional FASTag Replacement
| Feature | Traditional FASTag Reissuance | OneTag Portability (Rajmargyatra) |
| Physical RFID Tag | Must be replaced; old sticker discarded | Retained on windshield |
| FASTag Tag ID | Changes completely | Remains unchanged |
| Windshield Damage Risk | High (peeling off adhesive stickers) | Zero (no physical alteration) |
| Turnaround Time | 3 to 7 days for physical delivery | Instant digital transition |
| Application Medium | Multiple individual bank portals | Centralized on Rajmargyatra app |
| Re-porting Frequency | Unrestricted (requires purchase) | 6-month cooling period |
Deposit & Reserve Balance Guidelines
When migrating to a new issuer bank under OneTag, standard NPCI vehicle class minimum balances and security deposit guidelines remain applicable for your new wallet onboarding:
| NPCI Vehicle Class | Vehicle Types | Security Deposit | Minimum Balance Requirement |
| Class 4 | Cars, Jeeps, Vans, Tata Ace, Light Motor Vehicles | ₹200 | Nil |
| Class 5 | Light Commercial Vehicles (2-Axle) | ₹300 | ₹200 |
| Class 6 | Buses & Trucks (3-Axle) | ₹400 – ₹500 | ₹500 |
| Class 7 | Mini-Buses, 2-Axle Heavy Commercial Trucks | ₹400 | ₹500 |
| Class 12–16 | Multi-Axle Trucks, Heavy Construction Machinery | ₹500 | ₹500 |
Note: Security deposits paid to your previous bank are automatically refunded to your account alongside any unspent wallet balance once the former issuer closes the old account.
Looking Ahead: Toward Barrier-Free Tolling
OneTag represents an essential stepping stone toward India’s broader vision for next-generation intelligent transport infrastructure. As announced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, future developments will build upon this seamless back-end architecture to introduce GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) tolling and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera systems.
By standardizing digital identity and decoupling accounts from hardware, NHAI and NPCI are creating a unified, multi-service highway ecosystem. Combined with additional features available on the Rajmargyatra app—such as automated FASTag Annual Passes, Local Commuter Passes, and 1033 Emergency Helpline access—OneTag ensures that Indian motorists enjoy greater choice, zero stoppage, and frictionless journeys across the country’s growing national highway network.
