Bengaluru Metro Pink Line Ready: 7.5-Km Elevated Stretch Awaits September Opening
Bengaluru commuters enduring traffic jams on Bannerghatta Road may soon get relief. The 7.5-kilometer elevated portion of the Namma Metro Pink Line, connecting Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere, is complete and ready for public operations.
Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda confirmed that the state government is awaiting an official inauguration date from the Government of India, expecting the line to open to commuters within September.
The completed 7.5-km section forms Phase 1 of the larger 21.3-km Pink Line corridor (Reach 6), which connects Kalena Agrahara in the south to Nagawara in the north.
Elevated Stretch (Phase 1): Spans 7.5 km from Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere. Key stations include Kalena Agrahara, Hulimavu, IIMB, JP Nagar 4th Phase, Jayadeva Hospital, and Tavarekere.
Underground Stretch (Phase 2): Encompasses a 13.8-km subterranean network with 12 stations, including key hubs like Dairy Circle, M.G. Road, Shivajinagar, and Tannery Road, terminating at Nagawara.
While the elevated stretch is set to begin operations in September, the underground section is scheduled for completion and opening by early 2027.
Why This Metro Line Matters to Bengaluru
Bannerghatta Road is one of South Bengaluru's busiest commercial and educational corridors, frequently congested during peak hours. Opening the elevated stretch allows commuters to travel between Gottigere, IIM Bangalore, and Jayadeva Hospital while bypassing surface traffic bottlenecks.
Once the entire Pink Line opens, transit time from the southern suburbs to Nagawara in the north is expected to drop from over 90 minutes by road to around 35 minutes by rail. Interchange points at Jayadeva Hospital (Yellow Line) and M.G. Road (Purple Line) will also improve connectivity across the city's tech corridors.
Current Ground Challenges and What Happens Next
While rail infrastructure and safety evaluations have advanced, civic groups have highlighted last-mile connectivity issues along the Bannerghatta Road corridor. Local residents and commuters have urged the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) and civic authorities to fix damaged footpaths, repair road stretches, and clear debris near station entrances before operations begin.
The Karnataka government has submitted its documentation to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Once the Central Government approves the final date, passenger train services will begin immediately on the 7.5-km section.
